The Mountains are Calling...

They said that November is a transition month and not an ideal time to visit Banff. They said it would be drab and gloomy, with no snow and little to no winter activities. I have to admit, I am so glad they were 100% wrong!

We packed our bags with every intent to re-commune with nature and de-stress from the daily grind. What we did not realize was how much of an impact a place like this could leave on us forever. I understand now why Banff appears on everyone's "bucket list". In the winter months, Banff transforms into nothing short of a winter wonderland. The 360 degree mountains serve as the most stunning backdrop with majestic vistas and gorgeous sunsets.

It was certainly the ideal family vacation, even though our youngest fell victim to broken arm days before we set off for our Canadian journey. The scenic drive from Calgary into Banff National Park kept the kids excited as they knew exploring and adventure were just a few minutes away. Upon arrival, the first stop was the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel, a castle built in the 1800's. This castle exceeded expectations in every possible way. The attention to detail and superb service is top notch! The Stanley Thompson suite had a separate living room, fireplace, and great views (even though we did not sign up for a mountain view). We enjoyed the scavenger hunt for kids and the history tour. During our stay, there was a hot cocoa and smore's event on the terrace where we sipped and cuddled while enjoying the breathtaking views around the fire pit. On our last day, the castle hosted a huge event for Harry Potter fans. Kids and adults alike were dressed in their Harry Potter costumes and the castle served Butter Beer while trying to break a world record.

While its fresh mountain air and abundance of activities make it a year-round getaway, Banff is especially beautiful in the winter.

Adventure Highlights:

  • Ride the gondola up to Sunshine Village Ski & Snow Resort

  • Take in the stunning natural beauty at Lake Louise & sip hot chocolate the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

  • Capture stunning photos of Bow River and the castle at Surprise Corner

  • Enjoy walking on a frozen lake and watch locals play a round of ice hockey/ice skate

  • Tour the Cave and Basin National Historic Site
